Easier for first-timers

Clearer saving, no lost work, and safer text edits.

  • Better
Clear Save. The Save button says Save on phones too. After saving, a card tells you the file's name, that it is usually in your Downloads, and that your original file is unchanged, with a Share button where your device can share files.
  • New
Never lose your work. Scroll keeps your unsaved changes on this device as you go. If the page closes before you save, the next time you open Scroll it asks whether to pick up where you left off.
  • New
Remove changed words for good. When you save a PDF where you used Edit text, Scroll asks whether to remove the old words from the file for good (recommended; those pages become pictures) or keep the text selectable.
  • Better
Plainer names. Text is now Add text, Redact is Black out, Compress is Make smaller, and Match system is Same as device.

Any ink colour

One colour picker instead of two fixed inks.

  • Better
Colour picker. Tap Colour to choose any ink colour from your device's colour picker. It is used for drawing, new text and the date under a signature, and Scroll remembers it on this device.
  • New
Recolour a mark. Select a drawing or a text box and pick a colour to change it. Undo puts the old colour back.

A home for what's new

Every update now has its own page, easy to browse and read.

  • New
What's new page. Every version of Scroll on one page: pick a version from the list to read what changed, step to older or newer versions, or filter to new features, improvements or fixes. It works offline and follows your theme.
  • New
Easy to find. Open it from What's new at the bottom of the ⋯ menu (Appearance on a computer), or from the link on the welcome screen. The menu also shows which version you have.

Edit the words in a PDF

Change the text that is already in a PDF, not just add new text on top.

  • New
Edit text. Choose Edit text and every line of the PDF's own text gets a faint dashed outline. Tap or click a line and type; Enter or Esc finishes. Scroll matches the size, colour and background of the line and picks the closest standard font (Times, Helvetica or Courier, in bold or italic where the original is).
  • New
Easy to undo. Finish a line without changing it and it goes back to the original. Select an edited line and choose Delete mark to restore it, or use Undo.
  • Better
Phone tools. Edit text is in the main tool row on phones; Highlight has moved under More.
  • Note
How edits are saved. Your words are laid over the old ones on a patch of the page's background, so the page looks right, but the old words are still in the file underneath and copying or searching can find them. If they must be gone, Redact them first, or compress with Smallest.
  • Note
Limits. Only Latin letters, numbers and common symbols can be saved (anything else becomes ?, and Scroll warns you). Turn a page upright before editing its text.

The new app icon shows everywhere

Browsers that had seen the first version kept showing the old icon. Not any more.

  • Fixed
New icon and tab icon. The marker scroll icon and tab icon now load on every device, instead of the old engraved icon and wax seal that some browsers had kept.
  • Fixed
Clean updates. When a new version installs, every file is downloaded fresh, so an old file can't slip into the new version.
  • Note
Installed on a phone?. Android updates the home-screen icon by itself within about a day. On an iPhone, remove Scroll from the home screen and add it again.

A calmer layout on phones

Design review fixes: a shorter header, tools that fit the screen and bigger buttons.

  • Better
Shorter phone header. Two short rows instead of three: the logo, the ⋯ menu and Save on top, the file name below. Open, Merge and Compress are in the ⋯ menu.
  • Better
Tools fit the screen. The everyday tools are always in view; More opens a second row with the rest, and stays highlighted while one of those tools is in use.
  • Better
Bigger buttons. Header buttons are 44px tall on phones and touch screens.
  • Better
Tablets and small laptops. Header buttons go icon-only, except Save, so nothing wraps.
  • Better
A clean start. Before a PDF is open you only see the welcome screen: no greyed-out tools, and the logo appears once.
  • Better
Small things. The page number shows once, in the page navigator. Zoom reads Fit or a percentage on one line. The ink colours are labelled. The last page clears the navigator. Tick boxes show in every theme.
  • Better
Honest signatures. The Sign window says it places a picture of your signature, not a certified digital signature.
  • Fixed
Messages. Messages at the bottom of the screen no longer block drawing or highlighting underneath them.

A proper Appearance menu

The theme picker is now Scroll's own menu, with icons.

  • Better
Appearance menu. A screen for Match system, a sun for Sailcloth, a moon for Night watch and a star for Canopus, with a tick on the one in use. Works with touch, mouse and keyboard.

Clearer page number

The page number box matches the see-through navigator.

  • Better
Page number box. Fully see-through with just an outline, instead of a darker patch.

The logo comes alive

A slow swell for the Scroll logo, with no cost to speed.

  • New
Moving logo. The Scroll logo rides a slow swell in the header and on the welcome screen. It uses no layout or script work, and stops when your device asks for less motion.

See-through page navigator

The page navigator no longer hides the page under it.

  • Better
See-through navigator. The page underneath stays readable; the navigator turns solid while you point at it or type a page number.

Page by page

Buttons and a page box to move through a document.

  • New
Page navigator. Previous and Next buttons at the bottom of the document, and a page box to type a number and jump. The left and right arrow keys turn pages too.
  • Fixed
Current page. Worked out from where you have scrolled to, so it stays right on long or zoomed pages.

Scrolling on phones

PDFs scroll properly on phones and tablets.

  • Fixed
Scrolling. A swipe scrolls the page with Select, Text, Note and Sign; a tap places a text box, note or signature; dragging a mark still moves it.
  • Fixed
Phone width. The app no longer lays out wider than the screen.
  • Note
Marking tools. Highlight, Draw and Redact still mark with one finger, and say so. Choose Select to scroll again.

New icon

The marker-cut scroll joins the Argo fleet's icons.

  • Better
App icon. The hand-drawn marker scroll from the Argo fleet, on the home screen and when installed.
  • Better
Tab icon. The same scroll on the oxblood tile, replacing the wax seal.

Scroll sets sail

The first version of Scroll, the Argo PDF editor. Everything happens on your device.

  • New
Read and mark up. Open a PDF and highlight, draw, add text and notes, and redact for real: redacted text is removed, not just covered.
  • New
Sign. Draw, type or upload a signature, add the date, resize it, and keep it on this device for next time.
  • New
Pages. Rotate, delete and reorder pages, and save the pages you tick as a new PDF.
  • New
Merge and compress. Combine PDFs into one, and make smaller copies (Tidy, Balanced or Smallest, with a before-and-after view).
  • New
Works anywhere. Install it on a phone or computer, use it offline, open PDFs from Android's share menu or your computer's Open with, and choose Sailcloth, Night watch or Canopus.
